Stripe decline code
transaction_not_allowed
The card doesn't permit this type of transaction — for example online or recurring charges may be disabled on it.
Primary source: Stripe’s official decline codes reference
Why it happens
- The card is configured to block recurring or online payments.
- A regional or issuer restriction on the card.
- A card type that can't be used for subscriptions.
Should you retry it?
Sometimes — it depends on the issuer
If it's a setting the customer can change, a later retry may work; otherwise they'll need a different card. Pair retries with a reminder.
How to recover it
Retry on a moderate schedule and ask the customer to enable online/recurring payments or use another card.
Let Stripe's retry schedule run first. For invoices that stay unpaid after it ends, Recoverly opens a case and — with your approval — sends a 3-step payment-update sequence (Day 0 / 3 / 7) linking to Stripe's hosted payment page.
