Stripe decline code
pickup_card
The issuing bank flagged the card to be retained (historically, 'pick up the card'). It cannot be charged again.
Primary source: Stripe’s official decline codes reference
Why it happens
- The bank blocked the card due to fraud or an account problem.
- The card was reported lost or stolen.
- The account was closed or frozen.
Should you retry it?
No — the customer must update their card
A card flagged for pickup is blocked by the issuer. Only a different, valid card will recover the payment.
How to recover it
Ask the customer to add a different card via a secure update page rather than retrying the blocked one.
Retrying won't fix this code — the customer has to act. Recoverly's approve-first sequence emails the customer a Stripe-hosted payment page where they can update their card in one click. Recoverly never charges or retries cards itself.
